The Elston 5 x 6 Timber Greenhouseis ideal for first time gardeners. Constructed from traditional materials including preservative treated wood and horticultural glass to make this starter greenhouse a much more sturdier option when compared to plastic alternatives. Supplied withstaging down one side and one manually operated side vent included in the price.

Please note:This greenhouse is shown on a raised brick perimeter base built by one of our customers who opted for DIY installation. If you want the installation team to build your greenhouse you will need to prepare a flat, level base from either paving slabs or concrete.

Fully glazed with 3mm horticultural glass. The Elston Greenhouse is 6ft wide and incorporates a hinged door which opens outwards giving an opening width of 2’4 (70cm). Thismodel is 5'1x 6' (153cm x 180cm). It is made by a well established British manufacturer with a reputation for offering excellent quality, value for money and first class customer service. The timber originates from well managed, sustainable forests and is pre-treated with a factory applied, water-based preservative. Optional extras include adding a base frame made from 5cm2 tanalised timber which will add 5cm to the height given in the Specification section. This greenhouse can be installed without the base frame but like all wood and glass greenhouses it must be sited on a flat level base (details below)

This item is supplied in sections for DIY Home Assembly and instructions and all fixings are included. We also offer a low cost Installation Service where this item can be built for you by experienced fitters

What size timber for greenhouse frame? ›

Once you've chosen the wood, make a 6-inch width perimeter base in the measurements of your greenhouse. Use 6x6 timbers preferably. You can start by laying out the frame on the floor before attaching the ends.

What thickness is best for greenhouse? ›

We recommend 6mm or 10mm for twinwall polycarbonate sheets and between 3mm-6mm for solid glazing sheets. The most common thickness for greenhouses with solid polycarbonate panels is 6mm. This means it's suitable for any type of weather.

What are the disadvantages of a wooden greenhouse? ›

Disadvantages: Maintenance - Wooden frames, depending on the timber species and original treatment may require regular maintenance, such as applying a yearly preservative, painting, or staining, in order to protect them from rot, decay, and insect damage.

Will a wooden greenhouse rot? ›

On the flip side, wood can rot when exposed to the moisture common in greenhouses. Organic materials like wood are also susceptible to mold and are great food for insects.

How to maintain a wooden greenhouse? ›

As with any structure made from timber, good airflow and allowing the timber to dry out periodically is key, so routinely clearing any debris that has built up on the outside of the Greenhouse must be carried out in order to allow water to drain away fully and the wooden profiles to dry out.

What is the most inexpensive way to build a greenhouse? ›

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to build your own greenhouse is to use plastic sheeting, which is readily available at most hardware stores. Typically, you will want sheeting that is four or six mils thick. First, you will need to construct a frame to attach the plastic sheeting to.

What is the cheapest way to build a greenhouse? ›

Consider using PVC pipes or rebar for the frame; these materials are durable and budget-friendly. For the covering, opt for UV-resistant plastic sheeting, which is affordable and effective. Don't forget to scour local classified ads or building supply stores for surplus or discounted materials.

Should a greenhouse have a wood floor? ›

Wood flooring also provides excellent insulation that's very beneficial to your plants. Wood flooring would be great if you want to add a touch of organic elegance to your herb greenhouse! Unfortunately, wood needs regular maintenance to fend off decay and insects. It's a commitment, but it's well worth it.

What is the best material to build a greenhouse? ›

Glass is the highest-quality, highest-price option for greenhouses. It is the heaviest material and can be the most difficult to install, but if installed correctly and protected from shattering. Glass will outlast any other plastic option when considering the life of the product.

    Do I need pressure-treated wood for a greenhouse? ›

Unless the application is in a wet or very humid location or in contact with soil, treated lumber may not be necessary. For example, at UConn, the non-treated fir lumber frame of a greenhouse built in 1966 was still very strong in 2000 when it was taken down.

What wood is most resistant to rot? ›

Some species of wood are naturally rot resistant due to complex chemical compounds that they evolved to protect themselves against decay. Well-known domestic examples include cedar, redwood, old-growth cypress, mulberry, yew, osage orange, and black locust.
